This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.
We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.
A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but thatβs largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pairβs relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, whoβs the impetus theyβve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, thereβs an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
A Controversial Conclusion
Togetherβs ending, which wonβt be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, βI understand that choiceβ?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
